Tunnel and Railway history at Wringworthy

In the past, two railway lines ran side by side through Wringworthy. These were:

The GWR Launceston Branch, the local Great Western Railway line from Plymouth to Launceston and Cornwall (also formerly called Launceston &South Devon – LSD), and

The London and South Western Railway (LSWR) which provided a direct service from Plymouth to London Waterloo via Tavistock, Okehampton, Exeter and Salisbury.

Both lines have been disused since the 1960s.

The junction of the LSWR and GWR lines at Wringworthy lead to the creation of massive embankments supporting the LSWR line which ran above the GWR line. The resulting tunnel is approximately 45 metres long, 10 metres wide and 15 metres high.
